Just 100 Calories

Would you like to shed just a few pounds?

It may be easier than you think.

I was doing some house cleaning the other day. I was throwing out stuff I don’t need any more. I was going through drawers and closets getting rid of non essentials. You know how that is. Stuff accumulates.

During this process I happened upon a small article I clipped out of some newspaper many, many years ago. I don’t know what paper I cut it out of. Don’t even have a date. But the original article was by Elizabeth Large at The Baltimore Sun.

It was titled: Over Time, 100 Fewer Calories Each Day Makes a Difference.

Could you do it? Give up just 100 calories a day?

That doesn’t sound too hard. Just 100 calories. What would that mean giving up?

Well, don’t make any major life style changes.

Just Eat 100 fewer calories OR burn 100 more a day.

Just Give Up Just one of these:

1 tablespoon of butter

2 chocolate chip cookies

8 ounces of cola

1/3 cup vanilla ice cream

10 potato chips

2 cups of popcorn

four Hershey kisses

25 peanuts

1½ tablespoons blue cheese dressing

The article continues…….

To burn about 100 calories:

Again choose one:

Swim for 10 minutes

Shovel snow for 20 minutes

Dance at a club for 30 minutes

Wash windows for 30 minutes

Bowl for 30 minutes

Make love for an hour

Rake leaves for 20 minutes

Garden for 20 minutes

Walk briskly for 20 minutes

Jog for 10 minutes.

I trumpet common sense diet here at MTTD. This is about as great as common sense can get!

Can you give up just 100 calories a day?

Grilled Chicken Salad with Fruit and Honey Dressing

It has been so hot and humid I don’t feel like cooking anything. I don’t even relish turning the stove on at all. These hot and humid days are perfect for grilling and for dinner salads.

So that is what I am serving up for you today.

You can change the fruit to what you like or what’s on sale. Cantaloupe and blueberries are divine too. You could use beef or pork instead of chicken. You could even go completely meatless if you wish.

Use what ever kind of nuts you like, have in the pantry, or can afford. I used pecans. But any nut will do.

If you really wanted to you could stretch 3 chicken breasts into 4 salads and serve 4 people.

And just an aside. The fruit today was really good and sweet. It was wonderful!!!!!!

This is what you will need for 3-4 servings:

For the salad:

3 chicken breasts

1 head Romaine lettuce

About 4 oz fresh spinach

1 cantaloupe*

12 strawberries**

* Most likely you will not need all the canteloupe, so you will have some left. I had about ¼ of the melon left today.

**3 or 4 per salad

For the Dressing:

2 tablespoons seedless raspberry jam

2 tablespoons white wine vinegar

1 tablespoon honey

2 teaspoons olive oil

½ cup sliced nuts of your choice

Here is what you do:

Using a cooking rush and some canola oil grease the grill. Also brush a bit of oil on both iseds of the chicken. This is to prevent the chicken from sticking to the grill. Heat the grill over medium high heat.

Place the chicken breasts on the grill with one end slanted toward the 10 a.m. position. Grill for 5-6 minutes, a bit more if the chicken is thick.

Then turn the chicken around (not over) to the 2 p.m. and cook another  5-6 minutes. This will make cross grill marks on the chicken.

While the chicken is cooking wash the lettuce, spinach, and strawberries. Dry throughly.

Cut the canteloupe in half and remove the seeds using a spoon.

Using a melon baller make small balls out of the canteloupe. Unless you are practing to be the Next Food Network Star don’t worry if all your balls are not perfectly round.

If you have a strawberry huller remove the hulls from the strawberries. if you do not have one just use a knife. Cut the strawberries in half.

Place the canteloupe and the strawberries in the fridge until you are ready to assemble the salads.

By now it should be about time to turn the chicken over and start grilling the other side. Again turn it to the 10 a.m. position again for about 5-6 minutes.

When the 5-6 minutes are up turn the chicken around (again not over) to the 2 p.m. position and grill for 5-6 minutes or until the juices run clear.

See the nice criss-cross grill marks. That is what I was doing with the 10 a.m. and the 2 p.m on each side. Creating criss-cross grill marks.

While the second side of the chicken cooks combine the jam, wine vinegar, honey, and olive oil in a bowl and whisk well.

When the chicken is cooked through remove from the grill to a palte and let it sit for 5-10 minutes or so to cool slightly and to let the juices redistribute.

While you wait for the chicken to cool down a bit place the lettuce on individual plates …………

…………..and then add  the spinach.

When the chicken has cooled down as much as you want slice it and palce on the top of the salad greens.

Then add some of the fruit around the salad.

Drizzle with the dressing……………………. and don’t forget the nuts. I add those after the dressing so that they do not get soggy.

Scatter some nuts over the top. Serve with an ice cold drink and I guarantee you will feel much cooler.

 Bon appétit.

Courage doesn’t always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.’

  • One of my favorite ways to burn extra calories when my son was little was to simply run around with him. We’d play tag, soccer and hopscotch. It’s also fun to put on some fun music and dance crazy with your kids. You’d be amazed at how great a workout it is! I also read that switching the sugar in your coffee for a sweetener can save significant calories, especially if you drink 3 or more cups a day.

  • Beautiful salad! Your strawberries and melon look so good.

Weight control = portion control. It’s all about how much we eat and it doesn’t take a lot of effort to cut back. People go on diets and starve themselves and then can’t maintain it and are so hungry they eat everything but the paint on the wall. Been there and it doesn’t work. Your sound advice should be heeded!

Now could you come and de-clutter my garage? I have about a month’s work in there.

    • Roberta

Those strawberries and the canteloupe were excellent and SO sweet. Fruit this year is extra delicious for some reason.

Sure enough mate! If you pay airfare over and back I would love to come declutter your garage. But you also have to promise to make that lucious spaghetti recipe over on your blog.
