You know, I really don’t give a damn about men’s Low-T.
In fact, I am sick and tired of hearing about it! But I can’t escape the ads! They are everywhere: 50 times a day on my car radio and then I come home to dozens more ads on TV ay night. And on TV I have suffer through seeing men applying the stuff while hearing about unwanted hair growth.
From all the T, radio, and magazine noise about Low-T you would think there was a world wide plague of Biblical proportions!
Pardon me if I do not shed a tear! Pardon me if I turn a deaf ear! Pardon me if I ignore it completely!
Man up men!
Aging is inevitable. Get used to it.
I have to!
Nobody worries about me or any other woman and our lower hormones and resulting physical problems.
I might feel a little empathy, even caring about men’s predicament if there was a smidgen of caring by men in general and especially by doctors, about women’s low hormone levels.
Why do men and their loss of testosterone merit so much money spent, and air time given to them in terms of research, medications, and advertisements to help them deal with their ageing?
Just watching and listening to the men in these commercials cry, and moan, and groan about their predicament would be hilarious if it were not so sickening.
And they call women the emotional sex.
Since these ads began airing, a scant year or so ago, sales of testosterone have increased by two billion dollars. Yes – that’s billion with a B – a big, bold, fat B. Worse, it’s predicted that this figure will rise to five billion dollars in the next two years.
This is two billion dollars in sales and profit for a non-disease and a normal condition in men as they age. It is estimated that only 2% of men really physically suffer from low testosterone, while most men continue to produce enough testosterone to remain healthy well into their eighties.
As that wise sage of late-night television, Stephen Colbert, recently said:
A man on TV is selling me a miracle cure that will keep me young forever. It’s called AndroGel. …..for treating something called low T, a pharmaceutical company recognized condition affecting millions of men with low testosterone, previously known as getting older. [Emphasis mine.]
So it seems that what we really have here is greed combined with vanity: simple greed on the part of the pharmaceutical companies and vanity on the part of men.
Low T ~ Real or Hype?
Both ABC News and Reuters have weighed in on this issue. They both ask is Low- T real or hype? Both charge that too many doctors are just prescribing the pills without even any testing to determine if a prescription is really needed.
According to a review in the June issue of the Drug and Therapeutics Bulletin, testosterone replacement therapy is questionable because it has risks, its efficacy is uncertain, and there’s no strong agreement about whether low testosterone is really a disease in older age.
ABC News Reports:
Researchers in Texas, however, said that all those ads may be driving a potentially worrisome amount of overtreatment.
The New England Journal of Medicine warned that only about 2 percent of men older than 40 should be getting a boost at all.
That’s because while added testosterone can lead to increased muscle mass and sex drive, some doctors said too much raises the risk of prostate cancer and liver damage. [Emphasis mine.

None of this deals with the issue of why women and their lowering hormones do not merit any similar discussion regarding the physical ailments we suffer from and must deal with daily.
Women’s low hormone levels are every bit as important as Low-T is in men, in terms of leading a long and healthy life.
For years doctors used to prescribe Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) for women. Although there was no massive TV and radio advertisements for HRT like there are for men today.
From personal experience I can tell you HRT worked very well – no more hot flashes, no more interruption of sleep, more energy and less fatigue, not to mention weight gain.
But then there was a huge research study that said that HRT may cause heart attacks and other adverse problems. So my doctor took me, and doctors across the nation, took most women off HRT.
Now I have the same aggravating symptoms I had before.
So now what do most doctors’ recommend for women’s Low-E and loss of energy, weight gain, and low libido?
Exercise. Diet. Herbal Pills.
All of which do little to nothing and some of these ‘prescriptions’ may even be harmful.
No new magic drugs for women. No radio ads. No TV ads. No magazine ads.
Just suffer…............. preferably in silence please!
The Ignored Low T In Women
To make this issue even more complicated, many, many, many women suffer from Low Thyroid. It is estimated that 27 million women suffer from undiagnosed underactive thyroid. I can tell you from personal experience that doctors brush off any discussion and believe it is all in women’s minds.
While women suffer from low hormones and from low Thyroid too, there continues to be no designer drugs to help, and even though Low-T drugs may cause prostrate cancer and liver damage, Low-T remains on the market as sales soar into the stratosphere.
What To Do?
As that huge bubble of American humanity known collectively as the Baby Boomers age, there will be more women – and men too – who will have to deal with low energy, weight gain, and trouble sleeping at night, among other troubling symptoms and issues brought about by lower hormones and low Thyroid.
I think it is time for doctors and researchers alike do some real exploration and experimentation for both women AND men to discover what medical and/or natural medicines can really help and work to soften the effects of aging so all of us can lead happy and healthy, and productive lives.
We oldies but still goodies still have a lot to give, and now as we retire we have both the experience and the time to get it done.
So I challenge the Medical Establishment and Pharmaceutical Companies to spend the money and time to do the research in order to find real solutions to keep all seniors both healthy, strong, and contributing members of society.
2222Featured Recipe Hash Brussels Sprouts with Bacon and Eggs
I am a big fan of Brussels Sprouts: steamed, drowning in butter, roasted; I don't think I have ever had a Brussels sprout I did not like.
The best and sweetest sprouts are the small ones. Avoid the big ones as they tend to be bitter. I add a bit of sugar to any sprouts recipe I make. You know the song says ~ Just a spoonful of sugar........
If you are scared of bacon and bacon grease this recipe may not be for you. I use both bacon grease and butter in this recipe. Ohh the flavors you will enjoy!
Today’s dish can be breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a midnight snack. I love food and recipes that are so versatile. Plus this dish is easy to make.
Slicing the sprouts will be the longest part of making this dish. However, if you want to spend a bit more money sometimes I see pre-sliced sprouts at the store. Get those.
Cooking the sprouts in the bacon grease and butter gives them incredible flavor!
However, be careful not to over cook. To be at their very best the sprouts should be a bit crisp.
This is what you will need for 2 people
1 pound fresh Brussels sprouts
6 slices bacon (or more if you like)
3-4 cloves garlic or to taste
2 tablespoons butter
½ of a large lemon
1 teaspoon sugar
2 eggs (or more)
1-2 tablespoons shredded Mozzarella
3 tablespoons shelled pistachios - optional
Salt and pepper to taste
Here is what you do:
Fry the bacon over medium low heat until crisp. Sorry. No nuking. You will need the bacon grease.
While the bacon is frying and after washing and removing brown or dark leaves, cut off the stem ends and then thinly slice the sprouts and separate leaves.
Peel and smash the garlic.
When the bacon is done remove from pan and let drain on paper towels for a few minutes. Crumble the bacon into large pieces.
Add the butter to the bacon grease…………
…......and then add the garlic to the grease and sauté until you smell the sweet aroma of garlic. Let the garlic just barely and very lightly brown. Then remove and discard.
Now add the Brussels sprouts................................
.............................and cook, stirring frequently until covered with the bacon grease-butter combo, until crisp tender. Do not over cook or they will get soggy and go limp. If you over cook they will lose that gorgeous, pretty bright green color.
While sprouts are cooking fry or poach the eggs.
When the sprouts are cooked add salt and pepper, the sugar, and a squirt of the lemon, and stir one more time.
Add the cooked egg and salt and pepper the egg if so desired. Also toss some of the pistachios [Hard to see in the picture, but are there.] in the dish and add a bit of cheese on top of the egg.
Chow down and enjoy!
