Facts About McDonald’s I Bet You Never Knew

At age 65 there is not much that surprises, shocks, or knocks my socks off these days. However, the other day I stumbled upon a set of statistics that did all three.

I saw a slide show at the Web Site Business Insider titled, “15 Facts About McDonald’s That Will Blow Your Mind.”

The facts blew my mind too.

I am only going to share a few of the 15 facts here. I encourage you to click the link above to get all fifteen.

               Did You Know?

McDonald’s’ daily customer traffic, 62 million, is greater than the population of Great Britain.

McDonald’s sells more than 75 hamburgers every second.

Aside: Do the math. That is 4500 hamburgers every minute; and 2,700,000 every hour. Or looked at another way, 6,480, 000 every day!

McDonald’s‘ $24 billion in revenue makes it the 90st-largest economy in the world.

McDonald’s hires around 1 million workers in the US every year.

McDonald’s is the world’s largest distributor of toys, with one included in 20% of all sales.

The Queen of England owns a McDonald’s near Buckingham Palace as part of her vast real estate portfolio.

For the next three years, McDonald’s is going to open one restaurant every day in China.

Aside:  No. That is not a misprint or typo. EVERY DAY.

The only place in the lower 48 that is more than 100 miles from a McDonald’s is a barren plain in South Dakota. [NOTE: If you visit Business Insider they have a map so you can picture this.]

Americans alone consume one billion pounds of beef at McDonald’s in a year – five and a half million head of cattle.

Mind blowing, isn’t it?
I am speechless. And you know how seldom that happens to this humble blogger.
Featured Recipe                    Mashed Sweet Potatoes

Thanksgiving Dish #2

Many Thanksgiving tables have mashed potatoes and gravy along side the turkey. If you want some thing a little different this year, this may be just the recipe you seek.

Sweet potatoes are just what their name suggests. Sweet. Very, very, very sweet. They make a different and wonderful mashed potato for any time of year, but especially for Thanksgiving. They also add a dash of  color to your plate. They look stunning next to green beans and cranberry sauce. Very colorful.

And at only $0.74 per serving they are perfect for tight budgets.

There are many recipes for sweet potato recipes out there. I have made many of them. But I keep coming back to, and my favorite is the simplest one. I found it at the Martha Stewart web site.

I make one small addition. I add some chopped pecans to the top of the mashed potatoes.

This is what you will need for 4 people:

2-3 medium sweet potatoes

½ cup half-and-half

3 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons light-brown sugar

Salt and pepper to taste

Optional: Chopped pecans. This is my addition to this recipe. I sprinkle chopped pecans over the top of the potatoes. Makes a lovely table presentation and adds a nice crunch to the potatoes too.

Here is what you do:

Peel and cut the potatoes into 2-inch chunks.

Set a steamer basket in a large saucepan. Fill with enough water to come just below basket; bring to a boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer.

Place sweet potatoes in the steamer basket and cover; steam until tender, 15 to 25 minutes.

Drain, and return to saucepan.

Now in a small saucepan, bring half-and-half, butter, and brown sugar to a simmer, stirring to combine; remove from heat.

Add cream mixture to drained sweet potatoes, season with salt and pepper,  and mash just until smooth.

NOTES: I do the mashing off of the stove on a flat surface for balance. I also use a hand masher. You may want to use an electric one.

After mashing I whip the potatoes well with a wooden spoon.

If there are still lumps in the potatoes I mash a second time and whip a second time as well until I reach the consistency I like.

Then I place the mashed potaoes in a bowl and add the chopped pecans and serve.

Bon appétit!!!
