There is some interesting new research that indicates it may.

Researchers have noted for years that people who are active tend to live longer.

Now researchers may have found out why.

The best anti-ageing technique could be standing up, scientists believe, after discovering that spending more time on two feet protects DNA.

A study found that sitting down too much shortens telomeres, the protective caps which sit at the end of chromosomes.

Short telomeres have been linked to premature ageing, disease and early death.

Even if you exercise, if you do not stand and stretch every hour or so, your life could be shortened. And walking is even better,  even if only a few minutes each hour or so says this research.

When the weather permits take a short walk outside during your lunch break.

Even just getting up from watching  your favorite hockey team on TV loose again and going to the kitchen to get a glass of tea or beer might be enough.

You just have to stretch those telomeres.

Featured Recipe        Cheesy Mashed Potatoes with Gouda and Crispy Pancetta

Almost everyone serves mashed potatoes for their Thanksgiving dinner.

However, today’s recipe is something to really be thankful for!

It has bacon in it.

Bacon.

BACON!!!

Decadent. Heavenly. Delectable.

Did I tell you it has bacon in it?

This is a Better Homes and Gardens recipe.

This is what you will need for 8 people:

1 pound red skin potatoes

1 pound russet potatoes

2 green onions

1 cup cubed pancetta

1 cup half-and-half light cream or whipping cream

1 cup shredded Gouda cheese; divided

Salt and pepper to taste

NOTE: I halved the recipe. As single gal I really do not need that many carbs lurking in my fridge!

Here is what you do:

Peel the potatoes and cut into 1½ inch pieces.

Cook the potatoes in a large covered pot of lightly salted water for 20-25 minutes or until tender. Drain and return the potatoes to the pot.

While the potatoes are cooking thinly slice the green onions. Keep the white portions separate from the green. Cut the green parts on the diagonal.

If you could not find shredded Gouda (and I never have) shred the cheese now.

Very lightly spray oil in a skillet.

Cook the white part of the onions with the pancetta, stirring occasionally, over medium high heat about 8 minutes or until the pancetta is crisp. Drain off fat if any.

Drain the potatoes and add the cream to the cooked potatoes.  Mash with a potato masher or an electric mixer on slow speed until nearly smooth.

When the potatoes are well mashed stir in half of the shredded cheese and the pancetta mixture and season with salt and pepper. Reserve a little bit of the pancetta to top the finished dish with.

Transfer the potatoes to a serving dish. Sprinkle with the remaining cheese and the green onion tops.

  • Oh those potatoes look so creamy and delicious! I’d need to stand a week to eat those. I saw a segment on tv where someone had come up with work stations that raised and lowered so you could stand for a while, lower your desk and sit for a while and then stand again. I thought it was a great idea. 🙂

      That work station is a great idea. I need one of those for my home office. 🙂 I must say, the potatoes are decadent.

  • Yes, standing may help – I think mostly because you have to move around more. Standing still for long periods of time can be very difficult – drops your blood pressure and you’ll get varicose veins. 🙂

      Not positive, Julia, but I took the piece as saying we should not sit for long periods of time. I know how hard standing for long times can be difficult. Used to be a cashier at a grocery store and taught for many years too. I also know I get tired at the computer and have just learned by trial and error, that it is best for me to get up and walk around a bit every hour or so.

  • I think you are right Roberta that it’s doing anything but sitting that has the positive effect. I was on my feet for 13 hours straight on Tuesday with very little walking. My legs were more painful afterwards than since my last marathon many years ago.

    standing burns calories, sitting at desk for extended periods is not good. My work gives me an adjustable desk so I can sit and stand thru the day and still be engaged in my work.
